This Week’s Favorites

I love trying out new products.  At any given time I probably have at least 20-30 samples of different prooducts to try.  I find that there is no better way to see what products you like than to get a sample of it to take home and try with your daily makeup and hair.  I have tried face lotions, serums, primers, peels and even hair products.  I have loved some of the products and I have hated others.  You live and you learn, right?

Where do I get all these samples?  Well, I make what feels like my  weekly trip to Sephora and pick up some of my normal essentials, but I also snag a goodie bag of samples while I am there (don’t be afraid to ask, they always have some)!  Also my local Sephora does not always have what I am looking for in the store so I have to shop online.  Great thing about online is that you get free samples with E V E R Y single order.  Well after trying some of my latest samples I had to make a special trip back to grab the actual products because I liked them that much… So without further ado…

Bite Agave Lip Mask– I am obsessed with Chapstick and lipgloss (although I have never finished an entire tube of either because I lose it somewhere along the way), but Bite is my new favorite, and I think I might actually finish this tube, YAY! It is made with all natural products and leaves your lips hydrated and silky smooth.  This product tastes (of course I licked my lips as soon as I put it on, WHO DOESN’T?) and smells wonderful as well! I bought it in the satin finish that is a perfect pink color for my lips.  It adds just a hint of color and shine without all the sticky mess of your normal lipgloss.  I use it during the day with my makeup and at night before I go to sleep and my lips have never felt better.

Becca Backlight Priming Filter–  I have never really used a primer before (I am actually kind of shocked by this realization myself).  I keep getting samples of it and figured now was as good of a time as any.  I first tried the bare minerals blemish remedy mattifying prep gel and I did not like it all.  I couldn’t tell if I was applying it wrong or what but as soon as I put on my foundation or powder the primer was clumping up and coming off (pretty sure that is not supposed to happen)!  So I got a sample of the Becca Primer and immediately fell in love.  It gives your skin a dewy and bright look, which I know is what everyone is going for.  This primer is easy to put on, it blends in easily and it does not make your skin oily!  Day 3 and I just can’t express enough how great this product is. Primers really do make all the difference when used (who would have thought)!

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray–  I have very fine and very straight hair.  I can’t use a lot of products because they weigh my hair down and/or make it too oily. I love texturizing sprays and salt sprays though because they give a little body and texture to my otherwise limp and lifeless hair.  Bumble and Bumble has apparently been around for a while, but this is the first time I have actually tried it and I am so glad that I did.  This surf spray is perfect for my hair.  It is lightweight and free from harmful chemicals.  It really does make your hair feel like you just got out of the ocean.  I have a little “crunch” in my hair after I have sprayed it and style my hair.  It smells great and doesn’t weigh down my hair AT ALL.  I bet if you have curly or wavy hair this product would be even more amazing, but sadly I will never experience those coveted curls unless I make them myself!  I like this product so much that I am about to buy a few more bumble and bumble products (and that is saying something because they are not cheap $$)!

Now there is no telling what great new things will come out next week or even the week after that, but for the time being I just cant get enough of my new favorites!

Ole Henriksen

I love this man!  I don’t know who he is personally, but his products are amazing!  I have written before about the power peel microdermabrasion that I absolutely love. Well now I have finally decided to buy a few more products of his to try!

I got the 3 Little Wonders kit from Sephora a couple of weeks ago and have been hooked since I first tried it!  When you buy this set you get Truth Serum Collagen Booster, Sheer Transformation, and Invigorating Night Treatment.

I use the Collagen a booster in the morning after I get out of the shower.  Once it has soaked all the way into my skin, I then use the Sheer Transformation lotion on top as my daily lotion.  The Vitamin C Lotion smells A M A Z I N G.  It is like putting fresh peeled oranges on your face.

At night I use the Night Treatment and then again after it has soaked into my skin I use the Sheer Transformation lotion.  I can actually feel the Night Treatment tightening my skin as soon as I put it on.

Together all of these products have been great for my skin.  I feel like my skin tone is a lot more even then before I started and I have also started to notice that my forehead wrinkles are not as prominent and are a lot softer!

The 1st pic was about 3 weeks ago and the 2nd pic was this morning.  Please disregard my very crooked nose… I know it is probably hard for you to actually see all the results that I am talking about, but I can tell (and that is all that really matters)!  I read a bunch of the reviews online before and I went and bought this set and most of them were very positive and said something very similar to what I have said.  Overall I think these products are worth it.  I still have months worth of product left to use and I can’t wait to see if the results will continue to get better!

What’s In Your Purse?

I find purses absolutely fascinating.  I mean most women do, but I find them fascinating for a completely different reason than the obvious aesthetically pleasing sight of them.

What is inside of them?  Do you ever wonder what other people put in their purses?  Sometimes I see someone with a bag, that is bigger than a backpack, and wonder what the hell they could possible be carrying around inside of that luggage.  Other times I see people carrying around a small clutch and wonder how that is even possible in this day and age.  You can barely fit your cell phone in a clutch let alone anything else!  Where is all of your stuff?

So as the saying goes, I will show you mine if you show me yours!

Okay, so mine is pretty clean.  I don’t usually carry much in my purse.  I am probably one of the more reserved when it comes to this!  As you can see by the contents of my purse, I have a little obsession with lip products.  I have 5 right now (but I had about 10 until this weekend).  I try to clean my purse out on Sunday and get rid of the junk that I don’t need before the new week starts.  So from left to right lets see what we have!

  • White and brown leather coach wallet.  Nothing special about this wallet and it does not match my purse, which for some of you out there is a big deal!  No judgement, I just don’t have money to drop $100-$300 on a purse to match each bag that I have!
  • My Captain America 3 Civil War Movie Ticket because I just saw it and I have not put it in my memory box yet!
  • Bare Minerals Marvelous Moxie Lipgloss in Party Starter– For me, this is almost a perfect nude with just a hint of pink and shine to it.  I love this stuff.
  • Alba pineapple quench lip balm– I am a sucker for any kind of hawaiian product (since I was born and raised there).  This lip balm almost feels a little scratchy when you are putting it on, but it covers your lips completely and is not oily.  This is my favorite smelling chap stick because it smells like Pineapple! Yum!  Doesn’t taste bad either!
  • Beauty counter Lip Sheer in Petal– So I have posted about beauty counter products before and this is no exception.  These products are not made with any harmful ingredients and are all natural.  The petals is a very soft pink and the sheer lives up to it hypes giving your lips just a little bit of a shimmer to them!  Plus who doesn’t love the beautiful gold container!
  • My car keys with a Bumble bee and Daryl Dixon attached because WHY NOT?
  • My iPad
  • My Geek’d Con Tickets that I just bought
  • An assortment of hair clips and hair ties.  I workout most afternoons so I always keep hair clips and ties with me so I can throw my hair up once I get there!
  • Blistex medicated lip balm– this is the best balm if your lips are chapped or even feeling extra dry.  This will healing them so quickly and make them super soft again!  I tend to use this one at night to repair my lips while I am sleeping.
  • Jack Black Lip Balm in Natural Mint– I love how this makes my lips tingle!
  • Lily Pulitzer glasses (for work and writing this blog!)
  • Last but not least my Coach purse

So as you can see, nothing too crazy in my purse, just some of my favorite products that I just can’t seem to get enough of!  I have shown you mine, want to show me yours?

Brighter Skin, Brighter You

Like any other girl out there, I am always looking for the next best thing that will help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, freshen up my skin, and give me that overall youthful glow.  Although I am only 30, I like to take the proactive approach and start doing these things before it is too late!  Below are my go to products that I could not live without!

When it comes to choosing any kind of peel for your skin, you should always test a small portion of your skin at first.  I have had some friends that have had some serious reactions to acid peels.  If you have sensitive skin, you may need to take a different approach.

I don’t have sensitive skin, so I use all kinds of different peels on my skin.

Ole Henriksen Power Peel

This is probably the most powerful peel that I have used outside of a spa.  There is a 3 step process to this power peel.

  • Step 1 exfoliate with an almond scrub.  This takes off all the dead skin cells, exfoliates and opens up all of your pores.  This step alone is amazing.  My face feels so much fresher after this step.
  • Step 2 is the lemon acid peel.  I am not going to lie.  THIS PART BURNS.  Your pores are open and you are basically putting lemon juice on your skin.  You have to leave this on for a couple of minutes.  Try to make it the whole time if possible!  I turned on my blow dryer on cool and blew it on my face to help alleviate some of the stinging.
  • Step 3 is a chamomile lotion that goes directly on top of the lemon peel.  This step feels amazing!  I could not get this lotion on quick enough!  After a few more minutes of letting it set, you can rinse it all off.

Overall this peel was great.  My face was a little red immediately after, but it went away after about 3o minutes.  My skin felt so smooth and clean after all was said and done.  I have used this peel multiple times, so obviously it is not that uncomfortable!

Peter Thomas Roth FirmX Peeling Gel

This is almost more of a cleanser than a peel.  You simply rub it all over you face and it peels off all your dead skin cells.  Then you rinse it all off.  The results leave your skin silky smooth.  There is no irritation to this gel at all.

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Peel

This is by far my favorite peel.  I actually bought the 30 pack after I initially tried it.  I have tried the extra strength peels (since I am not as sensitive).  This comes in a 2 step process.  There is an alpha wipe and a beta wipe.

  • First you rub the alpha wipe all over you clean face.  I rub it in until the cloth is pretty dry (2-3 minutes) and then I let it set on my face for another 5-10 minutes.
  • The beta peel goes on the same way.  You will wipe the beta cloth all over you face again until the cloth is dry.  After you are done you DO NOT wash your face.

I love to use this peel when my face feels a little more oily or when I feel like I might be getting a breakout.  I have literally felt a pimple coming on my chin, use this peel and then woke up the next morning with nothing there! I highly recommend these!

I am all about sheet masks.  They are easy to put on, stay in place and give you results!  If you haven’t tried one then you are seriously missing out.

Karuna Brightening Face Mask

Karuna has a great line of products.  I have used their anti-aging masks, their hydrating masks and of course their Brightening masks.  You can’t go wrong with these one time use masks.  They are perfect for perking up your skin and giving you the results that you are looking for.

Dr. Jart Water Full Hydrogel Mask

I like to stick this mask in the Fridge for a little bit before I put it on my face.  This is the best hydrating mask that I have used so far.  When you take it out of the package the gel is dripping from the mask (that’s how much is on there)!  I will wear this mask for about 45 minutes and let as much of the liquid soak into my skin before I take it off.  When I wake up the morning after using this mask you can see a clear difference in how dewy your skin it!  I LOVE IT!

Miss Spa Deep Wrinkle Hydrogel Eye Treatment

I like to use these in conjunction with my under eye creams.  I like to use these (even thought I don’t have deep wrinkles) because I feel like these are more hydrating.  They stick right onto the skin, but I have found for best results you should lay down while wearing them so they do not slip!

Countertime Vibrant Eye Perfector

I cannot say enough good things about this eye cream.  Since I had my daughter I have dark circles under my eye.  It probably has something to do with the lack of sleep or the amount of stress that I now have, but I could not figure out how to cover them.  I got a sample of this product from my friend and was immediately hooked.  After the first night of using it I could literally see a difference the next morning.  My eyes were not as puffy or as dark.  The more I have used it the better the results.  I honestly can tell when I don’t use this product, so I use it E V E R Y night!  A must have in your beauty repertoire!

St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Facial Moisturizer

This is by far the best bang for your buck.  I have been using this face lotion for about 3 years now and I absolutely love it!  This tub will last me about 10 months!  This is a very lightweight lotion that is not oily.  You can actually feel this lotion soak into your skin.  This is my everyday lotion.  There are times when I use thicker lotions (at night) or lotions that have SPF in them when I know I will be outside a lot, but I always come back to this one.

Although these are my favorites, they may not be yours.  Sometimes you just have to try things until you find what works for you.  I literally am obsessed with all types of beauty products so I would love to hear what works best for you!

Have a B E A U T Y -ful day!

Easy MoHawk Hair

Have you seen women with what I like to call the Mohawk hair (long on the top and back and shaved on the sides) and thought that you could/would totally rock that hair?  I have… numerous times.  Problem is I DO NOT have the guts to do it.  I am too worried what it would look like with my face shape, plus I have pointy ears that stick out…  Short hair worries me!   I wish I had the guts to do it.  A prime example of this hairstyle is Kelly Osbourne.

While I may not have the guts to actually go and shave the sides of my hair, I can still get this look in just a few simple steps.  I get the best of both worlds!  I can keep my longer hair, while still feeling edgy from time to time…

This hairstyle should take you about 10 minutes to complete from start to finish!

First you will separate your hair into small sections and secure with small rubber bands (I used colors so you could see!).  The smaller the sections the tighter/smoother you can get the sides.  For the sake of this how-to I went with a more messy look and didn’t do as many sections.

Once you have all of your sections secure, get a teasing comb and starting making it big!  You will want a lot of volume once you start pinning it all down!

img_8086Okay, maybe this was a little bit too much, but that’s alright!

Now you will get your bobby pins and start bunching your hair up around each ponytail bottom.  You goal is to cover the ponytails so it is just a straight line back and you can’t see the underneath!  This step does not have to be perfect.  I actually prefer it to be a bit messy.

And now you are done!

So now the next time you have an 80’s party or you just feel like doing something a little different, you can!  This may not be for everyone or every occasion, but it is definitely still worth a try!

Outfits for Days

So I consider myself a pretty bright girl and by bright I mean bright COLORS.  I am very bright (smart) as well, but that is beside the point…  Anyway… Now I sound like an idiot.

For some reason on my workdays I always end up wearing different variations of black and grey, black and white, or black and black. For someone who is so BRIGHT I don’t show it very well with my work clothes (except with maybe the exception of my shoes). So much for me being colorful!

So I decided to put my colorfulness to the test.  Do I really like to wear as much color as I say that I do or is it all in my mind?  Only one way to find out.  I decided to take pictures of all of my outfits for a whole week.  The results were not that shocking, but nevertheless interesting (at least to me).

Let’s start with Thursday.  That is a good normal day of the week to start documenting my outfits (said no one ever)!  Nevertheless Thursday I had some pastel colors.  It wasn’t super bright and it was mixed with black but it was a start!

Friday was darker colors, but I did have some blue in there at least!  I tried, but this shirt was my 4th and darkest one that I tried on that morning.  I just wasn’t feeling the other ones!

Weekends are very casual for me, I basically live in workout clothes, because I actually do workout, but also because they are extremely comfortable.  So Saturday was my black Nike shorts and my BRIGHT orange Nike long sleeve shirt.  Comfy. Practical. Half bright!  Well on my way!

Sunday was obviously another workout day.  I ran errands, did a work-out, meal prepped and cleaned my house.  Why would I wear anything else.  Again I had at least partially bright colored clothes, but I am kind of cheating because most work out clothes are bright colored!

Now Monday was a very rainy day.  I find it very difficult to wear bright cheerful clothing when it is so drab and gross outside. So today I fell right in line with my black-grey scene.  I am not starting the work week off very strong.

Tuesday… Much better!  Today was still a little rainy and overcast but I got a new dress that I was determined to wear.  Floral is all the rage right now and I immediately put this dress.  I didn’t care what the weather was, this dress deserved to be worn immediately! Now I am back on track!  Bright colors all day long!

HUMP DAY (aka last day of experiment) was a failure on my part.  I pulled out my yellow work pants and had every intention or pairing them with a bright pink top, well my new pink top had a small hole that I didn’t notice until I put it on…Needless to say I will be returning the shirt, but this left me figuring out what to wear last minute… Black and white dress won out.  It was too easy.  I didn’t have to pair things together.  I literally picked the dress and my black pumps and called it a day.  I know I still could have paired my yellow pants with something else, but that was just too much work.  I failed the color test…I’m sorry!

So overall I have decided that I do have the capabilities to be bright and cheerful with my clothing choices every single day, but there are times when I simply revert back to my old habits and play it safe with black.  Why is wearing black just so easy?  Maybe I just need to try harder.  Summer is right around the corner, maybe that will give me some better incentive to bring out the bright colors more often!

Happy Wednesday!

My Everyday Look…

I like routine and I semi-like consistency.  So when it comes to my day to day hair, it is no surprise that I don’t change it very much.  Now that doesn’t mean that I don’t change the style (because believe me, I do), but the length that it is right now and for my workdays, it is basically the same everyday!

My hair is very fine and as straight as an arrow and I hate it!  I know so many people that straighten their hair every single day to get what I have naturally, but I curl mine most days to get what some of you ladies have and hate.  The grass is always green on the other side.  We always want what we don’t have.  Blah blah blah…

I need/want volume in my life.  My hair is limp and did I mention straight if I just let it do it’s own thing.  Everyday I actually do something (curl, straighten, braid, etc…) to my hair.  This is a must!

To start off I take a shower and wash my hair everyday!.

YES, I wash my hair E V E R Y D A Y.  I have tried not washing it and I just can’t do it.  I have tried dry shampoo and it is just not for me.

Moving on…

After I wash it, I blow dry it.  Then I start with the curling.  I alternate between a curling iron and a wand.  It just depends on my mood that day.  Today was a tapered wand!

I then part my hair into sections and start curling from the bottom up (like most normal people in the world)… I don’t actually know anyone that curls from the top down!

I take a section of hair, hold my wand upside down and start wrapping my hair around the wand and hold it there for a couple of seconds.

After all my hair is curled I spray a little hair spray on it and let it all cool and set while I am doing my makeup.

da da da da da da da da da da da DA dadadada da da da da da da da DA da da da DUH DUH DUUHH.. doom dum. (Jeopardy Theme Song)

And now the final result!

A final spray with my trusty hairspray and we are good to go.  Throughout the day, the curls will settle a little bit and give you a looser and bouncier curl. This is a great look for work as well as for a night out with the girls or just anything in between. Have fun with your style no matter what you choose!

Contour This…

I have scoured the internet for every YouTube video I could find on contouring.  I literally have watched them all in complete fascination.

I am like every other girl/woman out there. I love makeup. I do my makeup everyday. It makes me feel pretty and I like it… I don’t care if people want to judge me because I wear makeup because it is not for them, it is for me… Moving on. There is one thing about makeup that I have never tried but I have always wanted to and by now you can probably guess what that is… C O N T O U R I N G!

I am absolutely amazed by what some of these people can do with makeup. You can literally turn yourself into Taylor Swift! Who doesn’t want to be Taylor? I know I would love to be Taylor!

Although I love this concept, I am completely terrified by it. There is no way that if I contour my face that I will not look like a hot mess! I have anxiety just thinking about doing it. Since I have now watched countless hours of contouring videos on YouTube (don’t you dare judge me because you are just as guilty) I feel like there is no better time than the present to try out this process.

I decided to start off with a powder contouring kit.  I recruited my BFF Alexis to try as well (also a newbie to the contouring world) and off we went.  I chose the Smashbox kit for us that I got from Sephora.

before on the left and contouring on the right
before on the left and contouring on the right

So as you can see, the results were a little disappointing.  We started with completely fresh faces with ZERO makeup on. Once we contoured according to the videos and diagrams we both felt that we did not see a big enough difference that it would warrant us doing this ever again.  We have to have missed something.  How did we get basically NO results?    Completely discouraged I decided that contouring was just not for me.

2 Days later and countless more hours of beauty videos on Youtube…

I was not ready to give up.  I could do this.  I wanted to see the results that I saw on YouTube, so I went back to the store and chose a cream palette by NYX.  I came straight home from work and decided to give it another try.

left not contoured… right contoured (before blending)
left not contoured… right contoured

This time I was actually impressed.  I could see my results!  I don’t know if it had something to do with me already having makeup on or if it was the cream palette or both, but it worked!  It may not be perfect because obviously I will need to practice it a little bit more but I definitely felt like this could be worth doing.  Now I see what all the fuss is about!  YAY!

Although I likes the results I do not think that this is a feasible option for me to do every day because it did take longer than my normal makeup routine, but for a girls night out or a fancy dinner, YOU BET YOUR SWEET ASS I would do it again!

Go give it a try.  It is not as scary as I originally thought.  Recruit a friend or 2 to practice with you.
